Cherry Mere is a new lake of around one acre and is the fourth lake in the Cherry Lakes complex and is a piece of paradise! It is exclusively available to guests who book our fabulous new Pochard Lodge. Cherry Mere can be comfortably fished from the large astro turf grass platform which can comfortably accommodate two anglers (maximum 6 rods in total) and three anglers at a push (maximum two rods each).
Cherry Mere and it’s new Pochard Lodge opened for the first time in March 2015 following construction of the new Lodge during the winter of 2014/15. Pochard Lodge is Cherry Lakes largest Lodge which has two seperate double bedrooms as well as a sofa bed and can sleep up to six. It represents the height of lakeside luxury for larger groups of 4-6 people. The ‘Ladies really do love this Lodge’.
Cherry Mere has been stocked with 125+ Carp ranging from 10lb to 32lb+. The majority of these Carp are doubles with at least 15 twenties. These fish are all attractive fast growing Mirror, Common and Ghost Carp and should all be well worth catching. We expect Cherry Mere to have at least 30 Carp over 20lbs by the end of 2016. It is not unusual for visiting anglers to catch as many as 10 double figure plus carp in one trip. A target of say 4-6 is a more realistic expectation. Although like all lakes, Cherry Mere can have it’s off days!
Most of these Carp have ‘enjoyed’ living in Cherry Mere since 2014 as they have been regularly fed on a combination of Spod Mix, Pellets and Boilies. It is clear that the Carp have done well in this perfect environment with the average Carp putting on around 5lb in their first year. Similar to our other lakes we will continue to feed them to ensure they grow and stay in good condition.
With this level of stock in a one acre lake, Cherry Mere should enable most anglers to catch on most days during their stay. It should not prove to be too difficult but as it is not as heavily stocked as either Cherry Springs or Cherry Pool, we are NOT describing this lake as a runs water.
Fish care and safety is paramount across Cherry Lakes. An approach welcomed by all good anglers who want to catch high quality good conditioned Carp. All anglers are expected to follow any advice or requests from the fishery management concerning fish safety.
All Lodges and the Cottage are provided with Carp Cradles, a 42″ Landing Net and a Weigh Sling, so no need to fill up the car with these, and avoid the wet fishy smells on the way back from your holiday! All Carp caught must be photographed over the Carp Cradle and returned to the water in the weigh sling.
Cherry Mere also contains 100 Crucian Carp and Tench, along with a significant number of small Carp. These Carp grew from the Carp fry which survived the winters of 2013 and 2014. These small Carp should be fun to catch on float tactics (along with the Crucians and Tench). As a result small and soft baits are not recommended unless you want to catch small Carp. Due to the high fish stock levels in Cherry Mere, there is no weed.
Cherry Mere was drained fully when it was created in February 2014. Whilst the new lake was being created we took the opportunity to clean up and reshape the bottom to create some interesting features as well as different feeding conditions for the Carp. Cherry Mere’s features include bars and shelves, to silt beds and pockets, as well as the reed and tree lined margins. See the map of Cherry Mere for full details.
A significant amount of new planting has already been undertaken to both the new banks as well as the margins. We will add further trees and ground cover during next winter. Our aim is to make this lake as beautiful and as peaceful as the other lakes across the complex.
