Amazing winter fishing
Exclusive lakes are great for cold water fishing
Saturday 17 January 2026
I have always felt that fishing from our Lodges is at its best when the weather is cold, wet and miserable (or all three!). It really was cold and horrible last week and yet two anglers had a rewarding visit to Cherry Lakes. Both managed to catch with the water really cold and at times partially frozen.
At times like this, the smaller exclusive lakes really do come into their own. These lakes are very well stocked, and they are not too big. All areas of the lake can be reached by anglers fishing from the Lodges. This is not the case on the bigger Cherry Lake, where the Carp have much more scope to 'hide'.
Now whilst Kingfisher Lodge on Cherry Springs is heavily booked until the end of February with just a few available spaces, we have a lot of avaiability for Pochard Lodge on Cherry Mere (very surprising as you read what it is capable of producing in the hardest of conditions) and especially for Egret Lodge on Cherry Pool. So if you fancy some great winter fishing, with the reassurance of being warm and protected from the elements, whilst steaming your favourite programmes over our reliable high speed private WiFi network, then please fill in the on-line booking process or give us a call (01285 869887).
Gary Owen is a long term regular of Cherry Lakes and has fished all of our lakes. His favourites for a January session being Cherry Mere and Cherry Springs. He is a good angler who always catches. Indeed a few years ago he was lucky enough to be here when it snowed, and he caught one of those very rare beasts........a Snow Carp.
This year he stayed in Pochard Lodge for a week and had an amazing result. During the course of his stay he landed 17 Carp. A total which included 6 x 20's with 3 over 25lb+. These are included in the photos here, with the biggest (29-02) being the lead photo above. All of his his Carp came to boilies and wafters
Although not as prolific as Gary, who had the advantage of knowing the lake well, Connor Barker made his first trip to Cherry Lakes last week and must have had his doubts about his own sanity when he turned up on Cherry Springs to see much of the lake still covered by ice! Fortunately our aerators soon opened up, and kept open, much of the lake enabling his to fish properly.
Connor was joined on his trip by his partner Amber, who from memory booked the trip for him ( I suspect it was a Christmas or Birthday present.....but dumbly I forgot to check).
By Wednesday Connor had started to work the lake out when he caught on Wednesday night this 24-02 Common pictured above. .
He went on to complete his brace of 24lb winter Commons when he landed this impressive looking Carp on Thursday. He was even happier than I was.
Excellent angling from both Gary and Connor. Well done both and we look forward to your next visits..
