Four Cherry Lake 30lb+ Carp this week

Inspirational 80 year old John Foy lands the biggest at 33-04
Friday 17 May 2019

A fantastic Monday to Friday period on Cherry Lake. The last day or so built significantly on my last update. Fishery manager Dave tells me it has happened before.....but I am not sure......all three of the Lodges produced a 30lb+ Carp this week. Jamie Vowles in Heron Lodge was 'greedy' in that he caught 2 thirties. Needless to say we are very pleased.

I am delighted to report that 80 year old John Foy landed his personal best Carp on Thursday, when he landed a Ghost Common of 33-04 from Grebe Lodge. John is an amazing guy. In fact he is an inspiration to me, I hope I have the drive and determination to still be fishing when I am his age.

John and his lovely wife Denise have been visiting Cherry Lakes for the last 5 years. Despite the fact that John has various ailments including arthritis of the spine and hands, he just loves his fishing and is determined to keep going. For the last couple of sessions he has been ably assisted by his very supportive Grandson (31) Richard Harrison. Last year Richard landed a Carp of over 35lb. This year it was John's turn and what a beauty. A great Carp to have as your PB!

John and Richard had some 6 Carp between them, all over 20lb+ and lost two including a big one near the net. John is at last a member of the Cherry Lake 30+ club (the 120th ) and is now the proud owner of the Cherry Lake 30+ club polo shirt. Pop-ups and fish meal boilies did the trick for them. The weight of the Carp was too much for John to hold properly so Richard did the honours. What a great photo of Grandad and Grandson and a beautiful Ghost Common Carp.

Well done guys and I very much hope to see you both again next year.

A total of 17 Carp were caught between Monday and Friday which is a very good return for the three Lodges and was certainly the best week of the year. Who says you can't catch when the air pressure is high and you have sunny days?

I am pleased to note that 16 of these Carp were over 20lb including 4 x 30lb+ and several over 28lb. The odd one out was a 17-08 Common which is one of our home grown 'babies' coming through (see last update for details). I think this supports my view that the majority of the Carp in Cherry Lake are over 20lb. When I started Carp fishing in the 70's, 20lb+ Carp were a real target and fairly rare.....how things have changed......for the better!

Top rod for the week was Jamie Vowles. Jamie who was a first time visitor to Cherry Lake manged an impressive 7 Carp from Heron Lodge including a 32-08 Ghost Mirror (see last news story), a 30-02 Mirror (pictured above) as well as several big Commons including this 28-06 one below. Well done again Jamie....we look forwards to your promised return.
