Oakley Thorne sets new junior record for Cherry Lake

36-02 Common from Heron Lodge smashes his PB
Sunday 17 April 2022

At last the water is starting to warm up and the Carp are behaving more like it is Spring. The anglers in all the Cherry Lake Lodges caught during the last Monday to Friday period. A total of 7 Carp being caught, including two good thirties of 36-02 (Common) and 35-12 (Mirror), 4 twenties and a baby Common of 12lb.

The weather this weekend has been great. Sunny warm days, and today (Sunday) also with a lovely southerly breeze. The Carp have been sun-bathing in numbers, particularly at the house end of Cherry Lake. The anglers this weekend have been having a frustrating time with some 6 Carp lost to the anglers in Heron Lodge and The Cottage swim. Only Marcelo Aliceto in Osprey is doing well having landed 3 Carp to date.

The star of the week on Cherry Lake is 15 year old Oakley Thorne who fished from Heron Lodge with his dad Rob. After struggling for a few days, they both caught on Thursday. Dad Rob caught a very nice 24-03 Mirror. He was however delighted to be eclipsed by son Oakley who smashed his PB (previously 25lb) when he landed this 36-02 Common.

Oakley found a spot about 30 yards out just over the top of the bar immediately after the deep channel. He carefully scattered about 15 boilies around the area and fished his snowman in the middle and was well chuffed when the big Common roared off early on Thursday morning.

As you can see from the lead photo above young Oakley has obviously not been doing his 'homework' and has been watching too many Korda Carp videos! He was very keen to be 'bucketed' with some very cold water to 'celebrate' his new PB. As you can also see from the photo below he was also very pleased with his Cherry Lake 35+ hoody. Strangely Rob and Oakley have already booked to come back next year. Well done Oakley

Whilst Oakley caught his big Common at the first time of asking, regular Steve Keene caught his second thirty from Cherry Lake. Steve and his lovely wife Donna normally stay in Osprey Lodge and he always likes to have his left hand rod out along the margin just to his left, where he has often done well. This trip was no exception because early on Wednesday morning (around 02.00) Steve landed this 35-12 Mirror below. Well done Steve.

These two big Carp were entered into the 2022 Cherry Lake 30+ catalogue and bring the running total to 21 different 30's so far this year.
