Winter returns

Aaron MacDonald lands a 32-08 Mirror from Cherry Springs
Monday 30 March 2026

Where has Spring gone this week? Our weather is typically topsy-turvy! February to early March was well above average temperatures, and was warm enough to fool both the vegetation and fish into thinking Spring had arrived. Indeed we had some cracking catches during this period.

Well the last 10 days or so has been very different. Cold north westerlies, evidently blowing all the way from the Arctic (and it felt like it!) coupled with 5 frosty starts to the day, has really knocked the temperatures and fish for six!

Fishing couple Aaron and Katie MacDonald returned to Cherry Lakes this week braving the cold. They did very well despite the conditions landing, from memory, 14 Carp between them.

The biggest of their week fell to Aaron. This lovely Mirror of 32-08 is our lead photo for this update. This came to a bait positioned close to the far bank.

Katie also landed a lovely looking Carp, this time a Common of 22-08. I am pleased to pass on Aaron's comments that all the Carp caught had over wintered well and looked in great condition.

It was hard going on Cherry Lake last week. The Carp really did slow down and for periods of time the lake looked dead. Colin Hunsley managed several more Carp after his good start last weekend, including the second thirty of his trip, this night caught fully scaled Mirror of 31-11 pictured above. Cherry Lakes Fruit boilies was the bait that did the trick for Colin.

Hopefully the weather will warm up by next weekend. If it does I am sure the Carp will be like Easter Bunnies!
